The Master of Christmas Merriment
Presenting the Lord of Misrule from Duncan Royale’s celebrated History of Santa II collection, copyrighted 1985 — an elaborately detailed, individually numbered figurine from a limited edition of 10,000 pieces. This example is No. 06390.
In medieval and Tudor England, the Lord of Misrule was traditionally appointed to preside over the Christmas season’s feasting, entertainment, and merriment — a colorful character who ruled the holiday revels. Duncan Royale’s History of Santa series explored the legendary and historical figures behind seasonal traditions, and the Lord of Misrule is one of its most theatrical subjects.
Dressed in an extravagant Renaissance-inspired costume, he wears dramatically puffed slashed sleeves in blue and plum dotted with studs, a blue-and-green striped doublet with a white ruff collar, a sweeping green sash, laced trunk hose, striped stockings, and turned-down boots. His burgundy hat carries huge green feathers and a sprig of holly, and he holds his original long gold ceremonial staff, planted in the round base. His expressive face, mustache, and small goatee complete this striking composition.
Produced in Taiwan in 1985 and sculpted by P. Apsit and M. E. Duncan, this numbered limited edition is a wonderful example of the distinctive artistry that made Duncan Royale collectibles popular among Christmas and historical figurine collectors. Both original identification plaques remain attached to the underside, along with the original green felt-covered base.
Condition
Excellent vintage condition. This beautifully preserved 1985 Duncan Royale limited-edition collectible presents exceptionally well: the hand-painted finish remains vibrant, the original gold-colored staff is present, and the elaborate feathered hat, sculpted clothing, hands, and base appear exceptionally well maintained, with no obvious chips, cracks, or repairs noted.
