Officier des Chasseurs de la Garde Impériale
Officer of the Chasseurs of the Imperial Guard

A remarkably early French Napoleonic hand-colored engraving, depicting a mounted officer of the Chasseurs of Napoleon’s Imperial Guard in full uniform.

Research identifies this composition as corresponding to Plate 262 of the Martinet Troupes Françaises series, published in Paris during the Napoleonic period. The documented series dates from approximately 1807–1814/15, placing the original engraving design more than two centuries ago. Plate 262 is specifically recorded as Officier des Chasseurs de la Garde Impériale, with the horse facing left.

The finely engraved image has been individually enhanced with period-style hand coloring in rich red, green, yellow, gray and black. The original French title remains clearly visible beneath the mounted figure.

The engraving is presented under glass with a wide period-toned mat and gilt frame. The reverse retains an old Wilson Artistic Frames, 83 Barclay St., New York framing label. The present framing is later than the engraving and appears consistent with a late-19th- to early-20th-century New York framing period; the exact reframing date has not been established.

Condition: Authentic age is readily apparent. The engraving displays overall foxing, toning and scattered age-related discoloration, particularly through the upper background. These characteristics have been left untouched and are part of the piece's historical character. The hand-applied colors remain notably strong. The frame and backing show age-appropriate wear.

Because of the age and fragile nature of the work, the engraving has not been removed from its existing frame. Any portions concealed beneath the mat, including possible publisher information or margins, have therefore not been examined. Visible foxing, toning and age-related discoloration. Later professional framing. Due to the fragile nature and age of the engraving, it has not been removed from the frame for examination. Please review all photographs carefully. Visible foxing, toning and age-related discoloration. Later professional framing.
