Vintage 1983 Duncan Royale "Civil War" Santa from the celebrated History of Santa collector series.

A striking and highly detailed interpretation of Santa Claus during the American Civil War era, this figure is dressed in a wonderfully patriotic ensemble featuring a dark blue coat covered in white stars, red-and-white striped trousers, tall black boots and a coordinating red cap. Santa holds open an oversized stars-and-stripes toy sack, creating an unmistakably American presentation.

Produced by Duncan Royale of Fullerton, California, this Collectors Edition is part of the company's renowned History of Santa series. The original underside identification plaque reads "History of Santa - Civil War," copyright 1983, and identifies the piece as a limited edition of 10,000. This example is individually numbered 0931. The underside retains both original Duncan Royale identification plaques as well as the original green felt-covered base. The plaque also bears the names P. Apsit and R. Rodrigues. The figure still carries its original red "Santa Claus" story booklet hang tag on its gold cord.

Duncan Royale became known for elaborate, historically inspired Santa Claus figures created specifically for the collector market. Earlier examples from the History of Santa series have developed a following among collectors because of their substantial size, detailed sculpting, limited production and distinctive interpretations of Santa through different historical periods. The Civil War edition is particularly eye-catching, combining Duncan Royale's traditional Old World Santa styling with an unmistakable American patriotic theme.
