Product Details
A beautifully coordinated pair of classical European seaport prints after the celebrated French landscape painter Claude Lorrain (1600–1682), featuring two historically significant compositions from the renowned Liber Veritatis collection.
Rich in architectural detail, maritime activity, and the romantic atmosphere of the classical world, these two works capture the elegance and storytelling that made Claude Lorrain one of the most influential landscape artists in European art history.
The first composition, Plate No. 132, depicts the seaport with Paris carrying off Helen. Classical columns frame a bustling harbor, where elegant figures gather along the waterfront, small boats navigate the shoreline, and magnificent sailing vessels rest beneath a sweeping landscape.
The companion composition, Plate No. 198, illustrates the Embarkation of Saint Ursula. An architectural waterfront, richly dressed figures, and finely rendered ships combine to create a graceful scene of ceremonial departure.
Both prints feature delicate coloring in muted shades of olive green, rose, yellow, and soft blue-gray, beautifully complementing the architectural details and maritime landscapes.
The original engravings were executed by British printmaker Richard Earlom and published by John Boydell as part of the Liber Veritatis series during the 1770s.
Each print bears the historical artist and engraver inscriptions, numbered plate identification, and publisher inscription referencing John Boydell.
The two works are presented in matching gold-tone frames with textured champagne-colored linen mats, offering an elegant, unified appearance.
These complementary artworks would make a distinguished addition to a traditional library, private study, coastal residence, historic-inspired interior, or curated fine-art collection.
Historical Notes:
The printed publication inscriptions read 1774. Museum documentation dates the original compositions represented by these numbered plates to 1776 and 1777. The actual production date of these framed prints has not been independently established. They are offered as decorative prints after the historical engraved works, not as authenticated 18th-century impressions.
Condition:
Both prints remain protected behind glass in their matching frames. Visible age-related toning and scattered spotting are present, particularly around the paper margins and linen matting. The gold-tone frames show minor finish wear, rubbing, and small surface imperfections consistent with previous display.
Neither print has been removed from its frame for examination.
