Mid-19th Century American Polychrome Zinc Zouave Statuette – Attributed to Cornelius & Baker, Philadelphia – Model Documented by 1856

An exceptional and historically compelling 19th-century military statuette depicting a Zouave rifleman in distinctive period dress, posed in a forward-moving stance with an upright muzzle-loading long arm, side sword and equipment, knapsack, and rolled blanket.

The heavy figure is rendered in cast metal consistent with zinc/spelter and retains an extensive old polychrome-painted surface. The soldier wears the characteristic wrapped turban, short dark-blue military jacket with contrasting trim, voluminous red Zouave trousers, gaiters, and field equipment. The sculpted figure stands against a naturalistic tree-trunk support and terrain base, which is mounted on a separate turned and painted wooden plinth.

Extensive research conducted on this particular piece found it to be a very strong visual and dimensional match to the documented Cornelius & Baker Zouave model produced in Philadelphia during the mid-19th century.

Cornelius & Baker were among America's important early manufacturers of cast-zinc decorative sculpture. Research published by Smithsonian conservator Carol A. Grissom documents a Cornelius & Baker Zouave measuring approximately 16¼ inches and bearing the firm's mark. Cornelius & Baker also exhibited a “Zouave & Highlander” at the Franklin Institute in 1856 and again in 1858.

The correspondence between this example and the documented model is particularly notable in the:

The long arm appears consistent with a percussion-era muzzle-loading firearm.

Attribution: No legible maker's mark or surviving maker's plaque is presently visible. The plinth has not been dismantled or altered in an attempt to locate a concealed mark. Because of this, the piece is offered conservatively as “Attributed to Cornelius & Baker, Philadelphia,” rather than definitively “by Cornelius & Baker.”

The attribution is based upon the close correspondence of the casting, pose, equipment, construction, dimensions, material, and presentation to the documented Cornelius & Baker Zouave.

Condition

Antique condition with substantial age-appropriate character. The figure retains an extensive old polychrome surface with visible paint wear, losses, crazing, oxidation, patina, and surface variation associated with age.

The turned wooden plinth displays visible age checking/cracking, surface wear, losses to the painted decoration, and wear around the edges. The naturalistic metal base and military equipment also show oxidation and surface wear. The upper firearm area exhibits age-related wear and oxidation.

The originality of every individual paint layer cannot be established, and no representation is made that the entire painted surface is untouched.
