An exceptional matched pair of vintage Florence Ceramics of Pasadena, California porcelain figurines depicting Marie Antoinette and King Louis XVI, dating to the late 1940s.

Both figures are finished in an elegant ivory-white glaze with extensive hand-painted gilt decoration and the delicate applied porcelain lacework for which Florence Ceramics became known. Louis XVI is portrayed in an elaborate court coat with lace cuffs and jabot, cane, and gold-accented shoes. Marie Antoinette wears an extraordinary full court gown decorated with hand-applied roses, gilt detailing and multiple tiers of intricate porcelain lace.

Particularly noteworthy is the Marie Antoinette left-arm-up pose. The more frequently documented replacement-market example is identified as the “Left Arm Down” version, making this variation especially desirable for the Florence Ceramics collector.

Florence Ceramics was established in Pasadena, California by Florence Ward and became one of the best-known California makers of decorative figurines during the mid-20th century. The Louis XVI design was copyrighted in 1949.
