Vintage Department 56 Dickens’ Village The Maltings #5833-5 – 1995 Retired

Add a piece of old brewing England to your Christmas village with this vintage Department 56 “The Maltings” from the Dickens’ Village Series, part of the Heritage Village Collection.

A maltings is where barley was steeped, sprouted and kiln-dried to make malt for beer and ale — and this hand-painted porcelain building tells that story in miniature. The rugged stone malt house rises straight from a snowy scenic base that straddles a stream, crossed by a stone arch bridge. Around the back stands the piece’s signature feature: a bottle-shaped kiln with its tall chimney, where the malt was dried. Blue-trimmed windows wear greenery boxes tied with red bows, holly garlands climb the stonework, and a flight of stone steps climbs to the ajar front door beneath the hand-lettered “The Maltings” sign.

Introduced in May 1995 and retired in December 1998, The Maltings is one of the most characterful buildings in the Dickens’ Village line — a wonderful anchor for an established village or a standout gift for a Department 56 collector.
